Kerala: Residents seek action against cops over suicide

KOCHI: The controversy over the death of 36-year-old Subhash has deepened with local residents staging protest before the Maradu police station on Monday. A large number of people including women and children took part in the protest march carrying the body of the victim, brought from Alappuzha Medical College Hospital after post mortem.
Construction worker Subhash committed suicide on Sunday morning allegedly in distress after police took him into custody after being found in an inebriated condition. Local people alleged that the police slapped him publicly several times while being taken into custody.
The protestors demanded action against P. R. Santosh, sub-inspector at Maradu police station, responsible for the assault.
Ajitha Venugopal, chairperson of Maradu Municipality, said representations would be given to the district collector and the chief minister seeking financial help to the family of Subhash. Complaints will also be filed before State Human Rights Commission and police complaint authority.
Justice (Retd) Narayana Kurup, chairman of the State Police Complaint Authority, is scheduled to visit Maradu police station on Tuesday. The visit is to ascertain the circumstances leading to the suicide of Subhash.
