IIT-Madras 1990 batch pledges Rs 8 crore aid
Alumni to raise fund for academic research.
Chennai: The 1990 batch of IIT Madras celebrated its silver reunion on Monday by pledging to give an amount of Rs 8 crore to the institution for academic research. Over 300 alumni from various batches gathered at the occasion.
Vellayan Subbiah, a 1990 alumni and MD of Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company Ltd, said it was a class of 290 students during his time. “We are trying to raise '8 crore for academic research by next month. We have collected half of it by now. We call it director’s spending on infrastructure, faculty development and developing entrepreneurship,” he said. He also said the batch is in talks with the alumni and the incubative cell of IIT M Research Park.
“For this funding we are trying to get the whole class of 290 but currently only 50 people has contributed,” he said. Explaining the reason to choose development of entrepreneurship he said one of the point students missed is that mentorship is required when it comes to entrepreneurship and also to develop an ecosystem.
“We are willing to mentor those who are on startups. Entrepreneurship in India needs a lot of encouragement,” he said. Speaking about donation by the batch, Director Bhaskar Ramamurthi said, “As they see the funds being deployed and making an impact, it’s self-fulfilling for them to donate such funds.”
