CPM to march against Kannur International Airport

Demands better package for land owners, proper drainage.
KANNUR: The CPM will hold a protest march to Kannur airport project office demanding a better package for the landowners and proper drainage system.
They allege that the authorities are not addressing these issues despite several complaints from residents and assert that the party is not against land acquisition.
“We are not against the move to extend the runway from 3,050 to 3,400 metres. However there should be clarity on the rehabilitation package for the 55 families facing displacement in the fourth phase acquisition,” CPM district committee member P. Purushothaman said.
“The locals are also complaining about the bad drainage and sanitation facilities at the construction site for the labourers. During the monsoon season, the waste was flowing into their water sources. Despite protests many a time, the company is not ready to sort it out.”
The CPM is also demanding for the construction of canals instead of natural ones destroyed during the runway construction.
The party also wants the district collector to lift the ban on construction of houses at Kanaad area and give numbers for the existing houses, which was also suspended by him.
CPM Kannur district secretariat member C.N. Chandran will inaugurate the march at 10 am Tuesday.
