Coop Act change to help housing societies
Bengaluru: The state government has decided to amend the Karnataka Co-operative Societies Act to enable house buildings societies develop layouts in a time-bound manner.
After visiting neighbouring states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, officials of the co-operatives department have prepared a draft bill which will be introduced in the coming session of the state legislature, Cooperatives Minister H.S. Mahadevprasad told reporters here on Monday. The amendment empowers House Building Co-operative Societies to purchase land from farmers to develop sites and also stipulates that Societies should allot sites to the applicant within a time limit failing which they should pay interest to the applicants.
Following complaints that several House Building Co-operative societies had duped applicants by not allotting sites, inspite of collecting money from them, the state government has decided to bring the amendment. The Bill also proposes single window agency clearance where societies can get clearance easily from all departments. At present, these societies have to take permission from various agencies like Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Town Planning Authorities, Forest wing and the PWD to develop the layouts.
