Hyderabad: The crime rate in Hyderabad has declined this year, city police records show. Police commissioner Mahender Reddy said that the Community CCTV project, imposing the Preventive Detention Act, cordon and search operations and visible policing had helped in reducing crime.
“There is a 14 per cent decrease in overall crime rate in 2015 compared to last year. The number of cases registered under the IPC and other laws by city police this year was 18,375 against 21,285 in 2014.
Under all the heads of crime there has been by and large a decrease, except in robbery cases. Since we registered chain snatching as robbery cases, the number increased,” said Mr Reddy adding that there was 35 per cent dip in total property lost offences this year as compared to last year.
“The PD Act against habitual criminal, crime tracking system, intensive patrolling, cordon and search operations, integrated criminal verification of known offenders and installation of community CCTVs, have helped us to reduce crime in the city. These measures have proved effective,” said the commissioner.
Police has undertaken several initiatives for building communal trust, reaching out and forging partnership with the community for crime prevention and detection, and maintenance of law and order, he added.
According to the police record, 352 cases of cyber crimes were registered in 2015 while 392 cases were booked last year. The police arrested as many as 154 persons including 13 Nigerians.
Sixteen cases were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and 37 persons including eight African nationals were arrested.
