Chennai: Bike thieves rob two women of valuables
Call to intensify police patrolling.
Chennai: Two incidents of motorcycle-mounted robbers snatching valuables from unsuspecting women were reported on Sunday. Vanaja, 33, of Thiruverkadu, had stepped out of her house to purchase provisions from a nearby store at around 8.45 pm on Sunday.
As she was riding on her vehicle on Lotus Street, two masked men on a motorcycle crashed into her causing her to fall. Before she could realise what was happening, the men inflicted wounds on her using a knife and then made away with her gold chain weighing one-and-a-half sovereigns.
Police sources said this was not an isolated incident. “Over the last one or two weeks, a handful of cases where the perpetrator seems to be a man or two men on a motorcycle have been registered,”
said an officer.
In a similar case, Nandini, 42, working at Royapettah Government Hospital, was returning home near Chetpet past midnight on Sunday when was waylaid by masked men on a motorcycle. The incident happened on Spur Tank Road as the victim was riding home on her moped and she lost her bag which contained '5,000, a mobile phone and an ATM card.
Residents told DC that recurrence of such incidents is worrying and that police patrolling should be increased. “Working women who return home late at night on foot are easy targets for such criminals. Police should increase night patrolling,” said Ramanujam, a resident of Adambakkam.
