The city’s gaga over her!
Find out the story behind the doe-eyed beauty.
She’s got everyone in a tizzy — be it her glamorous ensemble or her vivacious personality that’s graced a number of parties/ social dos around town recently, making heads turn and wonder who she was; from designers and socialites, to actors and (envious) models! Well, we’ve got the answer: the stunning singer-performer Sangeetha Ramalingam from California, making a whirlwind trip to Chennai, promoting her debut single Let it Be, as well as exploring baby steps into the big, bad world of the Tamil movie industry.
“I’m a Tamilian, but have spent all my life abroad - thanks to my family, I picked up music from a very early age — and used to visit India every other year to learn classical music, Bharatanatyam, the veena and tennis! I never took it as a career choice too seriously until about high school … now I perform all over the U.S, and even teach Carnatic music!” smiles the diva.
But Sangeetha also came with a background of growing up to film music — and it was but natural that before long, she wanted a taste of Kollywood. “I’m actually a healthcare professional — I work as a cardiac stenographer. It took some doing to convince my folks that I’d balance both these worlds. It was right before an earlier visit to India, that I was introduced to Pitbull’s manager who advised me to get out a demo. That’s how Let it Be happened, a fusion track and a dance number — my first single!” she quips.
It released to great response online — and ‘Sangee’ as her artist name goes, was an instant hit. But Chennai was still calling to her — “I arrived here exactly a day before the floods, and ended up being stranded at home, wading through chest-high water to escape and all my plans went for a toss! However, since then, I’ve still managed to network a little bit, attend a few events, and have a ball at the city’s social scene!”
Sangeetha’s Margazhi experience has been slightly limited – as many of the kutcheris and sabhas were compromised. “But I did manage to catch a couple of fantastic events. We host a lot of Indian singers when they come abroad to perform, so it was fun meeting them again,” Sangeetha muses.
The 28-year-old, who’s also drawn praise for her impeccable attire and fashion sense from the city’s designers, adds, “I’m really looking to balance my life both back home in the U.S and in Chennai — the idea is to take up acting or singing assignments which excite me — then I’m open to staying here for a few months and completing it. Since I have performing and modeling experience, acting too falls within the territory — so I’m looking forward to it! My family is close to director Venkat Prabhu, so there might be something in the pipeline very soon.”
