Thiruvananthapuram: Rt. Rev. Dr Zacharias Mar Theophilus, Suffragan Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church, passed away at a private hospital here around 5.52 p.m. on Sunday. He was 77.
He was hospitalised in an unconscious state after suffering a brain hemorrhage on Saturday. He took ill while on his way back from a visit to Muscat to attend Christmas programmes there.
His body was kept for the public to pay their homage at Pattoor church before taking to the church headquarters at Thiruvalla.
Bishop Zacharias was serving as the Bishop of the Chengannur – Mavelikara Diocese of the Mar Thoma Church since 2005.
He was born on August 29, 1938, as Oommen Koruthu. He was ordained a priest on July 9 that year and consecrated as a bishop in May 1980. He was installed as Suffragan Metropolitan on July 3, 2004.
