VGS Layout robbed of its peace

A large number of companies have come up in the area.
Bengaluru: Children and housewives are often seen shooing away motorists from parking vehicles in front of their house gates on 27th Main in VGS Layout of Ejipura.
The menace is a recent development, says Ms Vanashree K. (name changed). She recalls how peaceful the area was just a few years ago. “It was a perfect residential area as there was hardly any commercial activity. Now, we see traffic jams on our road. The bigger menace is the haphazard parking in front of our houses. I keep shouting at these irresponsible car drivers and two-wheeler riders, who park right in front of our houses, blocking our way. Now, even our little son has learnt from me and keeps telling motorists not to park in front of our gates,” she says.
The road saw a fresh coat of asphalt just five months ago, but it has already developed big craters, because of shoddy work, last month’s rains and heavy traffic movement. The potholes are causing traffic jams, but the BBMP is not bothered. “The electricity poles have been put up haphazardly and they are posing a danger to motorists,” she says.
The authorities should have been more careful while giving out licences to commercial establishments. “Our area has become a commercial hub. Many residents have turned their houses into shops and are renting out commercial spaces. We don’t know whether they are legal, but the law-abiding citizens are suffering,” she said.
A large number of companies have come up in the area and vehicles move on the road even after 8 pm, disturbing peace in the area.
“Children cannot even walk on the street, let alone play. Senior citizens too are finding it extremely difficult to walk on roads as footpaths are non-existent,” points out Patrick Raj, a resident of the area.
Ms Vinodhini M. too has similar complaints. She says the choked road and haphazard parking has made their lives miserable.
Commercialisation, a common problem across Bengaluru: MJ Yogesh, Assistant Executive Engineer
The roads that were laid after the BWSSB replaced their pipes are damaged. Why was the quality not ensured?
Some roads have been damaged because of last month’s rains. Also, the BWSSB had dug deep to replace the pipes. The mud settles down some days after laying the pipes and the road sinks because of that. These roads have been taken up for restoration in the new programme of works that have been approved. These roads will be fixed.
Residents complain that a couple of street poles hamper the smooth movement of vehicles. Will the BBMP shift them to avoid inconvenience?
The BBMP can only bring this to the notice of the Bescom. In fact, it is the duty of the Bescom to shift the poles and allow smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians.
Intense commercial activity in the area has disturbed the peace of its residents. Why were commercial establishments allowed to come up?
None of them have taken permission to convert their residential premises into commercial spaces. It will be brought to the notice of higher officials. Commercial establishments have not come up overnight. Majority of the areas in the city, especially Ejipura in Koramanagala, are facing this problem.
