Hyderabad: In a bid to get pharmacists more involved in the healthcare industry, the Union government wants them to handle medical devices to control infection.
Hospital-acquired infection is one of the biggest problems for patients who are chronically ill and also in post-operative care. Dr Sai Kumar K, national president of Doctor of Pharmacy Association said, “There is a strong need to have pharmacists at the hub not only for dispensing medicines but also to ensure control. The related risks to lead and manage the development, implementation and also the safety of the device can be effectively handled by them.”
At the same time, pharmacists are going to be part of the delivery formats wherein there will be a single window clearance for medical devices and related approvals.
Medical devices are a major aspect of patient care and as doctors are busy treating patients it becomes difficult for them to evaluate the condition of the devices which leads to dissatisfaction among patients and also hinders their care. According to Indian Pharmaceutical Association, this involvement of pharmacists will not only provide more jobs but will also ensure efficient healthcare as they are trained in understanding and also handling these devices.
With technology-based care taking over for effective medical practices, it is very important to ensure that there is proper infection control so that the end-user patient gets the best benefit.
