President Pranab Mukherjee wants locals to be employable
Hyderabad: President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said that there was a need to create employment for the youth inside the country along the lines of employability levels of Sundar Pichai and Satya Nadella who are products of the Indian educational system and are heading global companies.
While stressing on the need to focus on accessible quality education with skill development so that the youths are employable, he made it clear that a degree catering to a “one size fits all” no longer worked given our population structure, its diversity and vastness.
This would be a litmus test for our economists and policy planners, he said. The President expressed concern that none of the universities and colleges in India could make it to the list of top 200 educational institutions in the world until September 2015, when Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Benga-luru and Indian Institute of Techno-logy (IIT) Delhi broke into the elite list.
The President was delivering the inaugural address at the 98th All India Conference of the Indian Economic Association here.
“India is a young nation and hence it becomes imperative for the government and policy makers to come up with policies for achieving growth with job creation,” the President told the economic conference.
Economic strength
Mr Mukherjee said the Indian economy had proved its resilience. It withstood the US and the Eurozone financial crises. “We need to capitalise on these inherent and intrinsic strengths and create not only more jobs but also an entrepreneurial eco-system.
The youth today does not wait for opportunities, but creates them. The number of start-ups and their annual turnover are clear indicators in this direction,” he said.
“The ‘Startup India’, ‘Standup India’ programmes aim to do precisely this. Balan-cing growth with equity and social justice is a fundamental requirement of our democratic polity. A study of income disparities and their reasons is needed,” he said.
