Engineers must check encroachment of BBMP assets: G Kumar Naik

Mr Naik warned ward engineers that they would face the music if they did not gear up to protect Palike properties.
Bengaluru: Protecting the properties of BBMP from vested interests is the responsibility of ward engineers, said BBMP Commissioner G. Kumar Naik here on Sunday.
At a special meeting with all the engineering staff and zonal heads on Sunday, Mr Naik warned ward engineers that they would face the music if they did not gear up to protect Palike properties.
“Why are ward engineers ignorant about the misuse and encroachment of BBMP properties? Police complaints should be booked against encroach, disfigure and damage the properties. Police help should be sought and it should be brought to the notice of senior authorities, like zonal joint commissioner and chief engineers for inquiry,” he said.
The BBMP patrol vehicles, Praharis, should be used to detect the misuse of BBMP properties, like playgrounds, community halls and drains. The officials and engineers should give a route map to Prahari teams on a daily basis to identify BBMP structures and properties that face a threat, he suggested.
On maintaining the quality of roads, he said that untimely rains may occur anytime and the BBMP should be prepared to tackle such problems.
Desilting of drains should be taken up extensively at all wards and it should be photographed and videographed. To ensure transparency in desilting of drains, a technical committee will be formed to investigate any complaints of misuse, he warned.
Lakes should be developed to hold storm water. All zonal chief engineers should ensure that only clean water enters lakes, he said.
On complaints of damaged footpaths, Mr Naik directed the engineers to ensure that damaged roads and footpaths that are under the defect liability period should be repaired and fixed by the contractors. Public safety and convenience should be given preference, he said.
