Captain much sought after as poll player

To take alliance decision after party meet.

Chennai: In a snub to BJP’s claim that the DMDK was a part of the NDA front, the DMDK chief Vijayakanth on Sunday said those who claimed that his party was part of their front may continue to do so.

“Everybody is making such claims. Let them continue to claim so,” he said when asked about BJP’s stand that DMDK continued to be with the NDA front in Tamil Nadu. After participating in a blood donation camp held by his party in Madhya Kailash here, the DMDK chief maintained that there was “still time left” to discuss the alliance for the next year’s Assembly election. He said that he would take appropriate decision on alliance after his party’s general and executive councils and proposed party conference. He also indicated that he would disclose his party’s stance at the right time.

On various parties like DMK and the People’s Welfare Front comprising MDMK, CPI (M), CPI and VCK inviting DMDK to join them to fight the state Assembly election together, he said, “I thank them for the invite.”

DMDK has emerged as much sought after electoral ally with DMK, PWF and BJP want it to be part of their alliance. Even as BJP state leaders including party president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan and union minister of state Pon. Radhakrishnan met Vijayakanth on December 19 to persuade him to remain with their alliance, PWF leaders led by MDMK general secretary Vaiko invited DMDK to join their alliance on December 23.

Persuasion of DMDK by other opposition parties provoked DMK chief M. Karunanidhi to reiterate his party’s wish to have Vijayakanth led party in the alliance for the next year’s Assembly polls.
