Where have all cops gone, asks Chennai

Stringent vehicle checks and drive against drunken driving also seem to have disappeared.
Chennai: The much hyped but residents’ friendly concept of visible policing during night seems to be a thing of the past, particularly after Chennai floods. Active policing, with red and blue lights flashing from police vehicles at every other corner of Chennai roads, is no longer visible. Stringent vehicle checks and drive against drunken driving also seem to have disappeared.
However, a senior police officer said that visible policing concept is not shelved. But now, policemen are deployed with revenue and corporation employees who are engaged in flood relief works.
“From enumeration of flood affected people to distribution of relief to the people, everywhere you need cops. So, there is some manpower shortage right now,” the officer said.
When asked about the reason behind discontinuing the drive against drunken driving and vehicle checks, another senior police officer said it was a planned decision. “Many people are affected by floods. Many had lost their licenses and vehicle documents. So, we decided to give the motorists some breathing time,” the official said.
