Two pedestrian subways coming up on 100 ft road

The subways will be built near Ekkaduthangal bus stop and Kasi theatre at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore each.
Chennai: To improve pedestrian safety, the state highways department has proposed to construct two pedestrian subways at Ekkaduthangal on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai where the average number of people crossing the road is over 4,000 to 5,000 during peak hour. The subways will be built near Ekkaduthangal bus stop and Kasi theatre at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore each. Work is expected to be completed in 12 to 15 months from the date of award of contract. .
According to highways department sources, the bids have been floated for awarding work contract for the two pedestrian subways for the third time as it did not evoke much interest among contractors in the last two attempts. “Finding contractors for highways projects within the city limits is very difficult. The contractors are unwilling to participate in the bids as they are wary of delays caused by shifting of utilities, including water and sewer pipes and power and telecom cables, and resultant cost escalation,” the official said.
The pedestrian subways proposed near AG Church at Little Mount, MKN Road-GST Road junction and opposite CMBT at Koyambedu will be taken up after getting revised administrative sanction, the official said.
