Students deported from the US want to lie low for now
Hyderabad: Several students have defered their travel to US universities to the next semester because of the ongoing saga of some students being sent back. “We will wait till the first week of January. If things don’t ease out, we will not fly to the US.
“We will defer our studies to next semester as we have to only inform about it to our universities and can travel later on the same visa," said a student who was stopped from boarding an Air India flight a week ago.
These students have formed a group and are in touch with each other on Whatsapp and Facebook. Though some of their friends have cleared immigration, these students do not want to take chances.
They say the next semester process will start in April and they can be in the US before the August semester. Mr Deepak Reddy, a student, said: “We are about 25 students including two girls. None of us wants to take risk at this juncture.
Most of us have not even booked tickets. We are waiting for clarity on the issue from the Indian government and US authorities. Deferring a semester would mean going back by six months but that would be a better option than being deported.”
“We told our parents about our friends wanting to wait and watch. We can attend the next semester in August-september. “We have to inform the administration department in the universities in US. They will send us I-20 admission letters,” a student said.
Meanwhile, half a dozen candidates who were not allowed by Etihad to fly five days ago have left the city for US through other airlines.
