‘Beep’ song runaway hit on web
Online hits have crossed the one million mark and are set to climb further.
Chennai: There is no such thing as bad publicity, or so it seems as the controversial ‘Beep’ song has become even more of a hit on the Internet. Already soaring in terms of curious hits since controversy broke out with women’s groups denouncing the vulgar lyrics sung by Simbu and reportedly composed by young Anirudh, the song has taken off further after the Tamil Nadu police launched a manhunt for the singer Simbu, who is now absconding.
Online hits have crossed the one million mark and are set to climb further, proving the point about fame and notoriety having equal effect on publicity. Police action on another singer, Kovan, had seen online interest in his song on Prohibition take off just like this. The ‘Beep’ song is, however, in a more notorious league as half the population might have been offended by the depraved lyrics.
Two complaints — one from AIDWA Coimbatore district secretary A Radhika and the other from Tamil Nadu milk retailers welfare association — clubbed with media exposure, has been providing sufficient online fuel to send the viewership rocketing to new heights in the last one week.
While one Youtube video of the song shows 9.75 lakh hits so far, another video available online shows 3.32 lakh hits. These are the numbers of hits only on the two videos posted in Youtube. Several thousand Internet visitors had also viewed the song on many other sites on which the song, marked by heavy ‘Beeps’ obliterating expletives describing women’s body parts, is available. Naturally enough, both videos of the song have attracted comments, some of which also cross the line of decency, much like the song itself.
The Coimbatore police had filed a case under sections Indecent Representation of Women Act and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) of the IPC and Section 67 (punishment for publishing or obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act. Since the Coimbatore police registered the case, the viewer graph on Youtube show has been zooming to new heights. Public interest in the song shows no signs of dying out.
In Chennai, an FIR was filed under two sections following a complaint filed by S.A. Ponnusamy, state president, Tamil Nadu milk retailers welfare association. Both sections, including Section 67 under IT Act, 2000 and 292 of IPC, were invoked for circulating obscene material in electronic form for public exhibition.
