New doctors may be spared rural stint
They are likely to be exempted from the compulsory one-year service in government hospitals.
Hyderabad: MBBS students passing out from medical colleges this year (2015-16) are likely to be exempted from the compulsory one-year service in government hospitals in Telangana. Nearly 2,500 students will complete MBBS this year, while the state has just 700 government primary health care centres. The government plans to implement the compulsory service norm only for PG students who will be sufficient to work in these hospitals.
This is the first batch of students completing MBBS after the compulsory government service norm was brought in 2010 by the Medical Council of India. However, the Act needs to be amended if the Telangana government wants to give relaxation for MBBS students. The previous governments had given one-year postings for PG diploma students in 2010, PG degree students in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15. In 2014-15, the government gave one-year postings to 734 PG degree students, 150 PG diploma students and 60 super-specialty students.
The first batch of 2,500 students who took admissions in 2010 will complete MBBS in 2016, ready for one-year postings. But there are too many PG diploma/ degree/ super-specialty students for the government hospitals. The government wants to amend the Act and exempt MBBS students. "The proposal to exempt MBBS students from one-year service is under active consideration. The issue has been referred to the CM. After getting his approval, a Bill to amend the Act will be introduced during the Budget session of the Assembly," said Dr C. Laxma Reddy, minister for medical education and health.
