Thrissur: An environmental-cultural organisation named Nila Vichara Vedi will take out a three-day journey covering 300 km along the banks of Bharathapuzha in January. This is to re-establish the cultural bond that the residents on the banks had in the past with the river.
The ‘Nila Odyssey’ also envisages to focus on the need to breathe life into the ‘dead’ river by constructing check dams, conducting sand auditing and completing the resurvey of the river bed to evict encroachments.
The organisers of the event named Nila Parikramana said that the environmental deterioration caused due to the illegal land mining in the 210-km stretch of the river running through Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram could not be dealt with only through a ban on mining during certain months in a year.
The journey that begins from Parili near Palakkad town on January 29 will cover 18 different spots of cultural importance on both sides of the river, including the memorials of poets Vallathol, Kunchan Nambiar and Ezhuthachan.
Poet Akkitham, president of the Vedi, would not participate in the tour due to old-age illness. A team, including scientists, teachers, environmentalists, artists and public workers would be part of the study tour.
Those interested to join it can register on the Facebook page of the Vedi named ‘Nila.’ The Vedi had conducted such events in the past and the data collected would be circulated to revive the river.
