Flyover to ease rush near Technopark
Kilometre-long flyover planned at Kazhakootam.
Thiruvananthapuram: About a kilometre-long flyover is likely to come up at Kazhakoottam to ease congestion on the NH bypass near Technopark entrance.
According to sources, the plan is to have an overpass that starts ahead of Technopark main entrance when coming from the Chackai side and ends near Kazhakoottam police station. It will have 13-metre width.
Apart from decongesting the bypass near Technopark entrance, the proposed flyover could also ensure a free flow of traffic on the crossing point of the NH and bypass road at Kazhakoottam. Vehicles can easily enter and exit Technopark through the service roads, without crossing the NH bypass.
It has been a long pending demand to de-congest the NH bypass in front of the main gate of Technopark, where about 50,000 people are working.
The National Transportation Planning and Research Centre, which conducted a study on de-congesting the area last year, also suggested elevated road from Kazhakoottam to Technopark as a measure to de-congest the area.
According to the NATPAC study, all the road sections around Technopark have been operating with nearly three times more than its capacity during the base year itself.
A six-lane elevated road from Kazhakoottam to Technopark of length 2 km with at-grade service road on either side has been proposed by NATPAC.
Two exit ramps are proposed from the elevated road to the Technopark Phase I campus and TCS campus.
Considering the future traffic from the Technopark phase III campus to Kulathoor junction on NH bypass, a flyover a six-lane flyover at Kulathoor road intersection with a total length of 700m was also proposed.
About 30% of the trip makers of the Technopark Campus use two wheelers while 26% each use car and bus as their mode of travel, said the NATPAC report.
The BJP state leadership had also urged Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari to allow a flyover and an underpass at Kazhakoottam to address the traffic congestion near Technopark.
