PWF woos Vijayakanth to join hands

DMK also shows interest in tie-up with him for 2016 Assembly polls.

Chennai: Days after BJP leaders met DMDK chief Vijayakanth, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi and People’s Welfare Front leaders on Wednesday wooed the actor-turned politician to join their respective fronts to fight the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, due next year.

Hours after PWF leaders met Vijayakanth at his party headquarters at Koyambedu on Wednesday afternoon, Karunanidhi told reporters here that “Our desire is that when we sew up the alliance, Vijayakanth too should be part of it. We do not know what is in his mind.”

Asked if this could be construed as an invite, he said, “What I have said now is an invitation (to him).” DMDK is now the most sought after party with other Opposition parties wanting to have it in their alliance for the Assembly election.

“We have invited Vijayakanth to join our alliance to bring about a change in the political history of Tamil Nadu. We had a detailed discussion about the political situation in the State.

We are confident that DMDK will join our alliance. The PWF will emerge as an alternative front against AIADMK and DMK in the state,” Vaiko, MDMK leader, told reporters after a 70 minute-meeting with Vijayakanth.

He was accompanied by CPI (M) state secretary G. Ramakrishnan, CPI secretary R. Mutharasan and VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan during the meeting. PWF leaders met Vijayakanth days after BJP leaders called on the him and asserted that he is still part of NDA.

Vaiko said G.K. Vasan-led Tamil Maanila Congress is likely to join the alliance. When asked who would be Chief Ministerial candidate of the front, he said a decision on CM candidate would be taken at an appropriate time.
