New borewell system to rescue trapped children in Guntur
The device is safe, effective in dealing with the situation

Guntur: A student belonging to Guntur district invented “manipulator prosthetic borewell rescue system” and even won . Silver Leaf certificate for it at the International Confer-ence on Emerging Technologies in Mechanical Sciences (ICEMS-2015), held at Hyderabad recently. This innovative system would be useful to rescue children falling into borewells accidentally.
S. Rajesh, an M.Tech student in Vignan University, said the device was completely safe and effective in rescuing children trapped in open borewells than the conventional method of rigging a parallel tunnel at some distance from the borewell and going into it.
The operations of the prosthetic borewell rescue system are controlled from the ground. The device will be sent into the narrow borewell and will take out the child with the help of grippers. He further explained that the system consists of a manipulator, sensors, controllers and power conversion unit.
The prosthetic borewell rescue system is modelled in CATIA V6 software package. It is provided with the newly developed revolving and stabilising mechanisms for holding the child safely.
Mr. Rajesh said that proximity vision and non-vision sensors are used to detect the condition of the individual trapped in the well, depth from the ground, surrounding temperature, pressure and existence of any smoke/gas in the well. The proposed design is capable of handling situations wherein the child is stuck up at bottom and middle.
“Open borewells are more dangerous than holes in the heart,” he said and added that increasing incidents of death in borewells prompted him to find the new device.
University V-C Dr. C. Thanga Raj appreciated Rajesh and said: “The new system is really a ray of hope for children trapped in the borewells.”
Vignan University chairman Dr. L. Rattaiah and others felicitated Rajesh.
