Use IT to cut healthcare delivery costs: President Pranab Mukherjee
Bengaluru: While formulating the mental health policy, the government should ensure that due priority is given to human resource development in the field of mental healthcare and delivery, said President Pranab Mukherjee here on Tuesday.
After dedicating the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (Nimhans) to the nation as an institute of national importance and inaugurating the Magneto Encephalography Research Centre and Nimhans Heritage Museum, Mr Mukherjee expressed happiness that the Mental Health Policy covers several aspects of mental health.
A bill on mental health care, currently under the consideration of Parliament, also seeks to provide a robust legislative framework that assures standardised mental health services, he said. “It is also important to address the issue of stigma attached to mentally ill patients,” he said.
As Nimhans is located in the IT City, it should adopt modern, computer-based Hospital Information Systems to improve efficiencies at all its centres. Using IT to invigorate healthcare delivery will also help in reducing costs, optimising resource management and minimising paperwork, he said.
Governor Vajubhai Vala, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda and Union Chemicals and Fertiliser minister Ananth Kumar were present.
