Kochi Metro coaches to arrive on January 15
But maintenance and repair yard at Muttom not yet ready to receive them.
KOCHI: Even as the first set of Metro Rail coaches will reach Kochi by January 15, the coach maintenance and repair yard at Muttom is not yet ready to receive the rolling stock.
During a function to be held on January 2 at the Alstom manufacturing plant at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh, the three coaches will be handed over to Kochi Metro Rail Limited.
Union minister for urban development Venkaiah Naidu, minister for power and railways Aryadan Muhammad, KMRL managing director Elias George will attend the function.
The coaches are being transported to Kochi via road and the expected schedule of delivery is January 15.
Meanwhile, KMRL authorities are apprehensive over the state of affairs at Muttom yard where the coaches will be offloaded and the test run will be conducted.
“The pace of works at the yard is very slow and below expectation. The more than 900 metre long test track is yet to be fully ready,” said a top official with KMRL.
“Though DMRC exuded confidence over finishing the works by the time the coaches reach so that the trial run can be conducted by February, it will really be a difficult task,” sources added.
L&T and IRCON (a sister concern of Railways) are carrying out the track-laying and other civil works at the yard.
Once, the coaches are offloaded, many critical works have to be carried out on the coaches including coupling, testing of signal, electrical connectivity, sound and other safety norms. The tests will be done at the inspection bay line, which has been completed.
