Flood-hit roads to be restored by before February 1
Chennai: The highways department on Tuesday announced that all battered roads in Chennai and other parts of the state that were damaged during the recent floods would be restored by January 31. A high-level meeting by the state highways authorities also fixed February 2016 as the dateline for restoring causeways and bridges.
According to highways department sources, the state has sanctioned Rs 150 crore under the disaster relief fund to cover rain-hit roads in 38 divisions. So far, 150 bridges, culverts and causeways have been identified and repair works are being taken up at a cost of Rs 13 crore.
Landslides have also been identified at 119 locations and repair works at an estimate of Rs 1.90 crore are underway. Filling potholes, interim repairs and relaying entire roads are now taken up across the state. To ensure a smooth surface, bituminous concrete material is used and a distance of 2,667 km stretch will be ready by next month at a cost of Rs. 129.17 crore, sources said.
To ensure that there is no water logging or sewerage overflow, 54 breached roads have been identified and cross drainage works will come up at a cost of Rs 5.92 crore, highways department sources said.
