City beautification work on verge of completion
Only 20 per cent of the beautification project work is pending and would be completed before the month end.
Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is working on a war-footing to wrap up the city beautification works by the end of this month and also improving the civic amenities, in view of the International Fleet Review scheduled in February, next year. Among the beautification works, the painting of murals on city walls, median development, footpath renovation, laying of roads leading to IFR venue and beach nourishment are nearing completion.
According to GVMC sources, only 20 per cent of the beautification project work is pending and would be completed before the month end keeping in view that labour crunch might surface in the next month due to Sankranti. The GVMC has incurred expenses of about Rs 80 crore for the project though the budget allocation was Rs 55 crore. The civic body has planned to deploy one nodal officer for each ward in the city to oversee the sanitation works.
In a bid to curb open urination, the civic body is updating the location of the community toilets on its mobile application so that people can easily track and use the loo facilities. To ensure collection of garbage at every place, the corporation has procured 300 dump bins of one tonne capacity each. The beach nourishment work taken up by Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), in collaboration with the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI), with an estimated cost of Rs 13 crore would also complete within 10 days, said VPT Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu.
“We are going to revamp the port area, ahead of the IFR, at a cost of Rs 40 crore by landscaping, improving connectivity to the port area, laying new roads and other infrastructural advancements,” he informed.
