Telangana not to raze heritage units

The AG sought four weeks to file the affidavit.

Hyderabad: The Telangana State government on Monday informed the Hyderabad High Court that no further demolitions of heritage structures would take place for one month.

Advocate-general K. Ramakrishna Reddy informed this to a division Bench comprising acting Chief Justice Dilip B. Bhosale and Justice S.V. Bhatt while it was hearing a PIL challenging a GO that deleted Regulation 13 of Hyderabad Urban Development Autho-rity Zoning Regulations, 1981, incorporated earlier.

City resident T. Bucha Reddy had moved the PIL stating that the erstwhile AP government had issued GO Ms. No. 542 on December 14, 1995 adding a new regulation bearing No. 13 to the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority Zoning Regulations 1981.

Senior counsel appearing for the petitioner, Mr Sarasani Satyam Reddy, said pursuant to the incorporation of Regulation 13, the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority had notified several buildings of having heritage value. He said deletion of the regulation would pave way for demolition of such structures.

He recalled the recent demolition of the IAS officers’ association building which is notified as heritage structure.

The Bench sought to know from the AG about the competency of the HMDA and concept of heritage structures and how this was different from the Ancient Monuments concept.

The AG sought four weeks to file the affidavit. While recording the AG statement, the Bench adjourned the case to after the Sankranti vacation.
