Hyderabad: Drivers flounder in the dark

With no streetlights, Musheerabad road is a danger to motorists.

Hyderabad: The stretch from the Secunderabad railway station via Musheerabad crossroads near Gandhi Hospital to Narayanguda has few working streetlights.

Driving at night on the stretch is fraught with danger also because of the numerous potholes and sand or gravel which covers the road, making it more slippery. Besides, work on the Hyderabad Metro Rail is on full swing in the stretch. This stretch is illuminated only in patches by light from shops adjoining the roads.

Mr D. Nikhil, a resident of Malakpet, who travels on the route regularly at night after work says, “Driving on this route is a test of one's driving skills. One has to manoeuvre through the bad roads, when it is completely dark and the light from vehicles from the opposite side blinds one, sometimes making the potholes invisible. The chances of accidents are high.”

The GHMC is oblivious to this issue, which has been plaguing motorists for many months.

A senior official of the GHMC’s engineering department said, “It is not possible that the stretch does not have a single streetlight. There must be at least five-six lights. Otherwise it becomes dangerous to drive.”
