Chennai: Cops run as man kills wife in police station
Gowri (23) and her husband Ganapathy (27) both worked as casual labourers at the Tambaram Municipality office.
Chennai: The police did nothing and instead ran for cover as a man brutally stabbed his wife to death in broad daylight at an all women’s police station in Tambaram Monday. The wife had incidentally approached the police to seek protection against her abusive husband but was killed with a screwdriver right in front of the inspector’s office as the police locked themselves in their rooms in fear.
Gowri (23) and her husband Ganapathy (27) both worked as casual labourers at the Tambaram Municipality office. According to the police Ganapathi was an alcoholic and would regularly harass and beat up his wife.
Tired of the constant abuse, Gowri had approached the all women’s police station to seek help with the problem and filed a complaint against her husband.
The police had summoned the husband to the station to conduct an enquiry at 3pm. After word reached the municipality office that he was summoned to the station, Ganapathy went to his house and took a screwdriver with him. Gowri had already arrived at the station at 2.30 pm and was sitting outside the inspector's office awaiting his arrival.
As soon as Ganapathy entered the premises he started abusing his wife in foul language and began to charge towards her with the screwdriver. Gowri began to run from her husband but he managed to stop her and repeatedly stabbed her in the chest.
While the incident was taking place, the other persons present at the station all, including ironically the policewomen, began to run in fear. According to sources, the policewomen ran into their offices and shut the doors.
The constables from a law and order police station close by rushed towards Ganapathy and stopped him, beating him with their lathis. The police immediately called for an ambulance but Gowri breathed her last while on the way to the hospital.
On interrogation, Ganapathy told the police he had returned from a pilgrimage to find his wife with another man and has therefore abused her. Gowri's body was shifted to the Chromepet government hospital and a murder case under section 302 has been slapped on her husband.
Many questions have been raised with regard to failure to protect citizens who are inside a police station, a place believed to be the safest of all. A former employee at the station said that the complainants are not given a separate room to feel safe and since the station is always crowded there is no way to make out who the accused are and who the complainants are.
