3-2 in the Indian Super League final on Sunday. For the flood-affected people of the city, the football team’s win has come as a soothing balm.
Chennai looked dead and buried after going down 1-2 in the 87th minute to a Joffre goal. But they struck back immediately, under fortuitous circumstances, when the FC Goa goalkeeper Laxmikanth Kattimani guided a long kick from the right into his own net. It was the incentive Mendoza needed as he struck his 13th goal of the season and a priceless one for his team.
After three goals in three frenetic final minutes of an absorbing final in ISL2, the home crowd were stunned into silence even as the new kings of Indian football celebrated their famous win with gusto. With the popular Chennai Super Kings banished from cricket’s IPL for two seasons, the city has now got a crack football team to lavish their affections on.
