Students move Governor against Calicut University

The ACT requested the Governor to dismiss the Senate, the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar, from their respective positions.
KOZHIKODE: A section of students and teachers submitted a memorandum to the Governor against the Senate decision to pass a resolution to take action against women students who complained against harassment in the campus to the Chancellor and the Chief Justice. In their memorandum, Association of Calicut University Teachers (ACT) said that the resolution was completely irregular, illegal and against the provisions of University statutes regarding the procedure of Senate meetings.
“The admissibility of resolutions in the Senate meeting shall not contain arguments or defamatory statements and shall not touch upon matters pending before any statutory tribunal or statutory authority performing any judicial or quasi-judicial function,” the memorandum says.
The ACT added that since the complaint was under the consideration of the Chancellor, the UGC, the Human Rights Commission, and various grievance, anti-ragging, and women’s committees, the resolution was not only against the statute but also a blatant attempt to influence and subvert the procedures of these authorities and committees.
The ACT requested the Governor to dismiss the Senate, the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar, from their respective positions.
Meanwhile, the girl students who were facing action for complaining in a letter requested immediate intervention of the Governor in the issue.
“It is reliably reported by the members of the senate who attended the meeting that our name was on the original resolution and was called out when it was read which is against the statute. Since this is an attempt to threaten and silence us and to protect the antisocial elements who harass us, we request you most humbly to intervene in this matter and ensure that the resolution is cancelled, and that action is taken against those responsible,”” letter requested.
