Sell helmets: Riders tell police through Whatsapp
Hyderabad: Two-wheeler riders have taken up a campaign through Whatsapp asking the traffic police to sell helmets instead of penalising those riding without the protective headgear.
In Greater Hyderabad alone, police has issued over one lakh challans to two-wheeler riders without helmets from June 2014.
While there is a proposal with the transport department and traffic police to conduct counselling sessions for helmet rule violators after the GHMC elections, the suggestion for selling helmets has been well received by the traffic police. “It is a suggestion worth examining. We will look into it,” DCP Traffic Hyderabad, A.V Ranganath said.
The twin cities have recorded 1,054 accidents involving two wheelers so far this year, leaving 100 persons dead.
Most of the victims were not wearing helmets. Another 290 two-wheeler riders died in road accidents in Cyberabad.
Section 129 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 specifies a Rs 100 penalty for violating the helmet rule which can go up to Rs 300 for repeated violations. The High Court has asked the government to increase the penalty for which the MV Act will have to be amended.
