Pilgrims suffer as food raids slacken
Thiruvananthapuram: After local body elections closely followed by a Sabarimala pilgrimage season, food and safety raids in the capital have drastically come down leading to complaints.
Several restaurants around Attukal and Fort areas continue to serve poor quality food for Ayyappa devotees who halt here to visit temples in the city.
“Our expectations for food quality are minimal during the pilgrimage. However, having visited the city as a tourist before, I feel devotees are being fleeced,” said Sridhar Reddy, who complains of stomach upset caused by low-quality food.
A call made by a pilgrim to food safety helpline 1800 425 1125 on Sunday went to a phone that was ‘switched off.
“Complaints are taken only on working hours on working days,” an official replied adding that Sabarimala special drives are presently concentrated around Kottayam and Pathanamthitta.
It is pertinent to note that the same helpline answers all statewide complaints.
“It has been noted that several teashops in Thiruvananthapuram have stopped displaying their licenses in past month,” officials said adding that more raids will be conducted soon.
Meanwhile, office of the district medical officer also responsible for conducting raids claimed that they have organised several raids across the corporation area from the beginning of this month.
