NGOs don Santa Claus hat for needy children
Hyderabad: With Christmas fervour in the air, a few NGOs have come forward to make the festival a special occasion for underprivileged children, by teaching them a new skill.
Youngistan, an NGO with 200 volunteers around the city, organised a Christmas Carnival for nearly 300 kids from slums spread across Jubilee Hills, Rajendranagar, Motinagar and other areas.
“Every year we teach them a new skill. Last year it was dance and this year we taught them to play drums. We will pick interested candidates and train them further,” said Arun Yellamati, a member of Youngistan.
For P.T. Shaji, a resident of Sainikpuri, this Christmas is thanksgiving with his parents coming down from Kerala to celebrate with him. “We never celebrated Christmas away from home. But this time my parents are travelling a long way from Kerala. The most joyful thing is that my three-month-old niece, my sister and my brother-in-law are also joining us for the celebration,” added Mr Shaji, who works with an MNC at Madhapur.
Jayamary, who is working with an MNC at Gachibowli, said that she is waiting to meet her secret Santa and she had already purchased a surprise gift for him. For the first time, she is celebrating Christmas with her colleagues.
She says that from the time she joined the company nearly three months ago, she maintained a group of four close friends. “For Christmas I am going to get a new friend. I have already started praying for my friend. It will be a double joy for me this Christmas,” she added.
