Nellore: The annual Flamingo Festival will be held on January 9 and 10 in Nellore district. This festival provides a unique opportunity for people, particularly ornithologists, environmentalists, bird watchers, forest and tourism officials to view the breathtaking spectacle.
Every year from October to March, different species of migratory birds, roosting migrants and some rare and endangered species from various parts of the world visit the habitat. Siberian Storks, Open Billed Storks, Night Herons, Egrets, Little Cormorant, Golden Backed Wood Pecker, Spotted and Ring Doves, King Fishers, Painted Storks, White Necked Storks, Spoon Bills and other species of birds gather in large numbers.
The district officials have taken steps to prov-ide necessary infrastructure in Sullurpeta and Nelapattu and Bhimula-varipalem villages for the convenience of visitors. They will conduct a campaign about the festival and take steps to ma-ke it a grand success and conduct cultural progra-mmes on the two days.
The district administration has already constituted a food committee, cultural committee, protocol committee and exhibition committees and instructed to set up SHAR, animal husbandry, fisheries department stalls to explain achievements of the SHAR and other departments.
They will set up food courts and provide drinking water facility for the convenience of the visitors. For the first time, the district administration has taken steps to provide helicopter tourism facility for the convenience of visitors and identified a place for the helipad.
District collector M. Janaki conducted a meeting with the district officials and instructed to make necessary arra-ngements and directed to conduct campaign to explain significance of Flamingo Festival to the people. She instructed them to conduct cultural programmes to attract the visitors.
She instructed the officials to make necessary arrangements for supply of drinking water to the visitors and see that uninterrupted power is supplied and stressed on co-ordination among various committees.
