Kozhikode Mental hospital aims for international standards
Centre to house 1,000 patients after revamp.
KOZHIKODE: For years, Kozhikode Government Mental Health Centre, Kuthiravattom was crying out for a revamp and finally the Government institution is all set to be raised to international standards aiming at completely utilizing the one acre plot of the centre that will benefit both patients and inmates. As a result, the district administration in charge of the centre has prepared a detailed proposal to build new infrastructure and is ready to submit it to the State Government.
The centre which used to accommodate less than 500 patients and another 100 cured but abandoned ones, will, after the revamp, accommodate more than 1,000 patients.
Taking into account, the need of the mental patients, the hospital will have an elaborate garden cum park and a walkway attached. The name of the hospital will also be changed.
“Different sections of wards for children, women, prisoners and senior citizens will be set up, which is congested at present,” said District Collector N Prasanth.
“The complete facelift of the centre is our plan and we will have the highly advanced technologies to treat the patients and an elaborate OP. It was as part of the internship programme of the District administration that we were able to create an advanced master plan for the Hospital with the help of interns”, he added.
Rehabilitation centre for cured patients, deaddiction centre, skill development centre, accommodation facilities for patients’ bystanders and other visitors and Hi Tech kitchen will be among some of the facilities that will come up.
Facilities to trace the families of abandoned patients will also be started.. “Our mission is to raise the standard of the centre to one of the best mental healthcare centres in the country”, Collector pointed out.
A core committee comprising the District Collector; the District Medical Officer (DMO), the Managing Director of the Handicapped Welfare Corporation, the Superintendent of the hospital, representatives of Indian Medical Association (IMA), the National Institute of Technology, and the Karnataka Mental Health Association, the Engineer Consortium; architects, and mental health experts have been appointed for further discussions about the centre.
