Jayalalithaa calls for party general council meeting on December 31

Prepares for poll mode after tackling flood measures.
Chennai: Having been preoccupied with flood relief measures, the polls may have been the last thing on AIADMK minds in the last couple of months.
The party is now preparing to step seriously into poll mode. On Sunday, the party announced the meeting of its party executive committee while also naming a number of new executive committee members comprising mostly women.
The key decision-making bodies of the ruling AIADMK — the general council and the executive committee — will meet on December 31, party supremo and Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa said in a statement.
The meeting of the two bodies comes months ahead of the assembly elections in the state due next year. The meetings will be presided over by party’s presidium chairman E Madhusudhanan, the statement said pointing out that all the invitees should attend the meet without fail.
Ms Jayalalithaa also announced the new executive committee comprising 77 members. It is interesting that the party leader chose to select several women functionaries for the committee ranging from former ministers to Chennai corporation councillors.
The statement also directed the party cadres to extend their cooperation to the newly appointed members. “The new nominees list covered all parts of the state and particularly active women functionaries including local councillors at the grassroot levels. The party’s women wing has benefited by and large and this would strengthen the party further for the next year assembly polls”, an AIADMK MLA told Deccan Chronicle.
Of late, the party has also been expelling some functionaries for anti party activities. The high power meeting would also empower the party leader to take decisions on poll alliance and strategies, it was revealed.
