Hyderabad: 2 held for smuggling gold

The smuggled gold and his passport were seized and he was put under arrest, officials said.
Hyderabad: Two Hyderabad-based men returning by flight from Dubai after a visit were arrested by the Customs at the Shamshabad international airport here in the small hours of Sunday as they tried to smuggle in gold.
Police said one of them, aged 35, tried to smuggle in 349 grams of gold worth around Rs 9 lakh by hiding it under his clothes.
The man landed in the morning by a 'Fly Dubai' flight. He had been to Dubai on a visit visa a few weeks ago, boarded a return flight to Hyderabad by Fly Dubai and landed at Shamshabad around 3am.
While he was passing through the green channel, officials grew suspicious. On questioning, he admitted to have with him some gold bars.
“He wrapped four gold bars in a cloth and tied the cloth around his waist. Three each of 100 grams and one bar weighing 49 grams were seized from his possession,” said a Customs official.
The smuggled gold and his passport were seized and he was put under arrest, officials said.
The second person, also from Hyderabad, managed to mould 584 grams of gold on to the wheels of his luggage trolley, and tried to smuggle it in.
Customs personnel became suspicious about his movement and made a check. He too had been to Dubai on a visit visa and landed around 3pm. “The 584 grams of gold would be worth Rs 15 lakh” said a senior Customs official.
