Healthy bacteria could help you burn calories even during sleep
Wouldn’t it be just great if you could lose those extra pounds by just taking a nap? Well, scientists now claim that this could actually be true, thanks to a group of healthy gut bacteria. Now, researchers hope that their findings will lead to new treatments for obesity.
The study, carried out by Dr John Kirby and his team, from the University of Iowa, initially concentrated on the effects of risperidone – an antipsychotic drug that causes ‘significant weight gain’ in patients. After putting the drug on trial on mice, it was found that the drug was able to cause weight in the mice because it could significantly alter the bacterial composition of the mice microbiome.
This altered microbiome lead to a reduction in the resting metabolic rate that was directly responsible for the weight gain. The results of this study were published in the journal eBiomedicine.
