Hyderabad: Veteran Telugu actor Ranganath, 66, hanged himself in his house in Gandhinagar on Saturday evening. His daughter Neeraja found the body hanging from the ceiling when she came to visit him at about 5 pm.
The actor, whose full name was Tirumala Sundara Sri Ranganath, had scribbled a message on the wall asking his relatives to hand over his properties to his domestic help. There was no clear mention of the reasons behind the suicide, police said. Ranganath had acted in over 300 films apart from TV serials, but had almost retired.
Following initial investigations into the death of Telugu actor Ranganath, 66, police suspects that the actor, who was staying alone, was highly depressed. His wife had passed away in 2009. Neeraja said the actor had talked about suicide several times. “We had gone to psychologists for counselling a few times,” she said.
Minutes before his death, the actor had sent a message to his friend, who had invited him to a private event. “I regret my inability to attend function due to backache, I wish you grand success,” his message read. “His daughter came to visit him with some people who wanted meet him. They found the door locked from inside. When he did not open the door after repeated knocking, they had to break open the door. They found the body hanging from the ceiling,” said Musheerabad inspector B. Mohan Kumar. His domestic help Minakshi had left in the afternoon after cooking food for him. His son and daughter live in separate houses in the city, police said.
The actor had scribbled details of his properties on the wall with a black marker, with the message: “Give this to her (the help). Do not trouble her.” Police booked a case of suspicious death. The body was shifted to the Gandhi Hospital for postmortem.
