200 drunk drivers to lose licence

First batch of licenses to be suspended on Dec 31, says police.
Hyderabad: As many as 209 motorists who were caught driving drunk on three or more occasions are set to lose their driving licence. By December 31, the first batch of those booked for drunk driving on three or more occasions would have their licence suspended for up to six months. Traffic police and transport department officials are racing against time to prepare the list as the Supreme Court committee on road safety has asked the Telangana state government to submit details about action taken against drunk driving by the year end.
Of the nearly 70,000 cases booked for drunk driving in the city since 2008, the traffic police has short-listed over 2,800 persons caught at least twice for the same offence. They are not certain if the vehicles that were impounded for drunk driving belonged to the driver or others. To list out repeat offenders, the traffic police is using photographs and videoes taken when the drunk drivers were booked. The traffic cops are also taking details of driving licence and Aadhaar card number of multiple offenders.
“From 2013 we have been collecting the driving licence number and Aadhaar number from those who were booked for drunk driving when they come to retrieve their vehicles and are produced in court. We will send the first list of persons involved in drunk driving offences for three or more times to the Road Transport Authority to suspend the driving licence. Thereafter the list of those involved twice would be sent,” said DCP, Traffic, Hyderabad, A.V. Ranganath said.
