Motor Vehicles Department moots temporary online registration

It was estimated that they had received about Rs 320 crore from customers annually.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Motor Vehicles Department has suggested online issuance of temporary registration for new vehicles to stop dealers from collecting handling charges from customers.

Transport Commissioner Tomin J. Thachankary suggested to the government that the system of temporary online registration being followed in Rajasthan could be adopted here also.

The dealers could obtain temporary registration from regional transport offices online and hand it over to the customer with a statement that no handling or service charge has been collected.

The total one-time tax or lumpsum tax also has to be paid at the time of temporary registration, he said in a letter to the transport secretary.

The MVD recently had conducted raids on many vehicle dealers across the state and initiated action against 71 for illegally collecting handling charges. It was estimated that they had received about Rs 320 crore from customers annually.
