Foxconn-Sony deal renews hope among ex-workers

In all 1,300-odd employees lost jobs, out of which these 493 refused to accept VRS.

Chennai: With Sony entering into an agreement with world’s leading electronics contract manufacturer Foxconn to produce Bravia line of televisions in a plant near Chennai, there is renewed hope among the former employees of Foxconn to get their jobs back.

Highly placed sources in the industries department told Deccan Chronicle that Foxconn has already commenced the production of Sony TVs some three months back at Irungattukottai in Sriperumbudur plant of Competition Team Technology (India), a subsidiary of Foxconn.

Sources also said that 380 workers have already been employed and more recruitment is going on. This fact is not going down well with 493 ex-workers of Foxconn, who lost their employment when the company suspended the operation in its facility located inside Nokia Telecom SEZ.

In all 1,300-odd employees lost jobs, out of which these 493 refused to accept VRS or severance package section under 18(1) of The Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 in termination of their employment.

They chose to fight and went on appeal before Assistant Commissioner of Labour (ACL), but with little success.

Mr S. Kannan, president of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) of Kancheepuram, district chapter, said that workers are preparing to file writ petition in Madras High Court. “In January this year, there was a news that Foxconn was planning to put-up a facility at Oragadam to manufacture Sony TVs, but that was refuted by the company. Now, the company seem have begun the production recruiting new people, instead they should have considered the ex-workers”. A. Soundarajan, MLA from Perambur consitutency, said that he was not aware of commencement of Foxconn manufacturing activity. “I would like to see Foxconn revive its unit in Sriperumbudur inside Nokia Telecom SEZ. I will look into the matter”, he said. K. Rajini, president, Foxconn employees union, said that papers are being readied to file the writ. Efforts to contact the Foxconn went futile as several calls went unanswered.
