At 75, Maratha strongman wins friends across border
Siddaramaiah praised Pawar for his contribution to the country’s agriculture sector.
BENGALURU: Cutting across party lines, veteran politicians of Karnataka including former prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and BJP vice president B S Yeddyurappa hailed former Union minister Sharad Pawar for his contribution to the country in 50 long years of public life.
Interestingly, the state government demonstrated its magnanimity to the Maratha strongman though he has demanded merger of Belagavi with Maharashtra government, and the government of that state has created a separate ministry for monitoring the border dispute with Karnataka.
In fact, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah praised Mr. Pawar for his contribution to the country’s agriculture sector and described him as the “competent politician” to become the Prime Minister. “Sharad Pawar has all the qualities to become the Prime Minister of our country because he is the most experienced and successful politician the country has seen. He has been the CM of Maharashtra on four occasions and also served in parliament and state legislature. I have a long association with Mr. Pawar and taken his advice and guidance whenever I faced a political crisis. He is a good administrator,” he added.
Mr Siddaramaiah said Mr. Pawar has friends in all political parties, but no political foes. He was elected MLA at a young age, and at 37, became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. “It shows his leadership attribute and administrative skills,” he added.
Replying to felicitations, NCP leader Sharad Pawar said people were sensible and wise and would not tolerate if members were unable to honour their commitment to people for which they have been elected.
“When Indira Gandhi imposed emergency, people defeated the Congress and brought Janata Party to power. But they could not run the country for two years. Thereafter, the same people who defeated Congress unseated the Janata Party and handed over the power to Indira Gandhi. So, people are sensible. If people like us are not able to honour the commitment to people... people will not tolerate. I have faith in common people of this country. They are wiser than politicians,” he added.
