Staff salary hike by February, says Oommen Chandy
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday told Assembly that the government was planning to implement the recommendations of Pay Commission for employees either by January-end or early February 2016.
He was replying to the adjournment motion notice given by CPM MLA A K Balan on the issue. The chief minister said the government was expecting the second part of the Pay Commission report soon.
The first part was discussed by a Cabinet subcommittee and certain issues had been looked into. Further discussions would be held after receiving the second part.
Justice C N Ramachandran Nair Commission had submitted its report in July recommending a hike in government employees salary ranging between Rs 2000 and Rs 12,000 in basic salary.
The other major recommendations included hike in house rent allowance ranging from Rs 1000 to Rs 3000, minimum wage of Rs 17,000 and maximum of Rs 1.2 lakh and increase in retirement age from 56 to 58.
The chief minister said the decision on implementing the report would be finalised after taking into consideration the suggestions of staff unions.
Earlier, Balan while giving notice for adjournment motion on the issue, criticised the government for delaying implementation of pay panel recommendations. He said five months had elapsed since the government received the report but no action had been taken on it.
He said the Cabinet subcommittee constituted to examine the recommendations was headed by former finance minister K M Mani who had resigned. But the government is yet to bring in the new man.
Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan said the prices of essential commodities had gone up two to three folds during this period but the government had not implemented the pay panel report. There was no justification in delaying it, he said.
Later, Speaker N Sakthan refused permission for the adjournment motion leading to protests from LDF members.
