NGOs help build lives of widows, ailing people
In first phase, 400 severely affected people from Ambedkar Nagar benefitted.
Chennai: It was a long queue of women. Mostly widows and those suffering from physical ailments and diseases such as tuberculosis and cancer lined up near the entrance of the public health centre at K.K. Nagar who were waiting to receive the relief aid kit by a group of NGOs on Thursday. The 120 women, who had lost most of their belongings when water gushed into their huts on either side of the Ambedkar Nagar colony during the recent floods, feel the gesture shown by kind-hearted people is their hope and lifeline.
“Except a few of my dresses and footwear kept outside, the floods took away most of what I had earned through these years. We are thankful to these people and this will help us at least with our basic needs,” said 55-year-old K. Japamala, a mother of two. She arrived in her stretcher all the way to collect the relief kit. With an aim to rebuild the lives of flood victims in Chennai, two NGOs, ‘Habitat for Humanity’ and ‘Adaikalam’, have begun relief operations through their campaign ‘Build back better Tamil Nadu’ in a three-phased manner. The first phase is started at Ambedkar Nagar colony.
As a part of the relief measure, the NGOs distributed Rs 8,000 worth relief kit that consists of three tarpaulin sheets, rope, kitchen-set, bucket, bio-mass stove, plastic mat and a hygiene kit to 150 women who were identified by the NGO as the most severely affected during the floods. “As a first phase, we have selected 400 severely affected people from Ambedkar Nagar colony who are physically disabled, suffering from diseases such as TB, cancer and other diseases. Later we will be sending a team of engineers to assist them to build their settlements and then are planning to provide a financial aid to those identified,” said Rajan Samuel, managing director, ‘Habitat for Humanity’.
