Manimandapam for Sivaji to be ready by October 2016
The government stated this in its schedule submitted before a Division bench.
CHENNAI: The state government on Thursday informed the Madras high court that the construction of Manimandapam for matinee idol late Sivaji Ganesan will be completed by October 31, 2016. The government stated this in its schedule submitted before a Division bench comprising Justices Satish K. Agnihotri and K.K. Sasidharan. Originally, P.N. Srinivasan of Triplicane filed a public interest litigation to remove the Sivaji statue from the junction of Kamarajar Salai-Dr Radhakrishnan Salai on Marina on the ground that it obstructed free flow of traffic.
The high court had on January 23, 2014 ordered the removal of the statue. Since there was inordinate delay in shifting the statue, one P. Nagarajan filed a contempt application. When the contempt application came up for hearing in the first week of September 2015 before the Bench, the state government informed the court that the statue will be shifted to the memorial which was proposed to be built by the government on 65 cents on Durgabai Deshmukh Salai in R.A. Puram, opposite the erstwhile Sathya Studio.
Meanwhile, the state government filed an appeal before the Supreme Court, challenging the removal order. When the appeal came up for hearing on November 15, the state government submitted a schedule for completion of the manimandapam. As per the schedule, tenders will be called for on January 15, 2016 and the same will be finalised before January 31. Construction work will be over by October 31, 2016.
Following this, the apex court had directed the state government to adhere to the schedule strictly and no more time will be given for the completion of the manimandapam. When the contempt application came up for hearing on Thursday, Additional advocate general P.H. Arvindh Pandian produced a copy of the schedule. Recording the same, the bench posted the matter for first week of December, 2016 for filing compliance report.
