KOCHI: Ayurveda is set to get a further impetus in Europe with a German university joining hands with Vaidyaratnam P S Varier Ayurveda College Kottakkal in the field of Ayurveda education, research and publication.

The Department of Natural Medicine and Integrative Medicine, University Duisburg, Essen, Germany, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kottakkal Ayurveda College, recently.

The university is the first one to launch a basic course in 2009 in Ayurveda for modern medicine doctors in Europe. The course duration is one and a half years. Under the MoU, the scope of this course will be expanded and its duration will be extended. Lecturers from Kottakkal will visit the university to impart education.

After completing this course, students will come to Kottakkal Ayurveda College to get more clinical exposure. Apart from education, the two institutions will collaborate in the field of clinical and pharmacological research and international publication.

The MoU was signed by Dr.Thomas Rampp (assistant director) and Dr.Syal Kumar (HoD Ayurvedic department) from the German university and Dr. Eswara Sarma (Principal, Kottakkal Ayurveda College) and Dr.Kirathamoorthy (Professor, Kottakkal Ayurveda College).

“Traditional Indian Medicine (TIM) or Ayurveda is among the oldest medical systems in the world. Ayruveda is not just a treatment, rather it is a way of life,” says Dr Thomas Rampp.

Dr Syal Kumar said that Germany was showing a perceptible shift in its interest from Chinese medicine to Indian medicine. “Earlier Germans showed more interest in the Chinese system. Ayruveda is facing issues of getting pure medicine and experts in treatment and we hope to overcome them and popularise the system,” he said.
