GCDA’s cool weather crop farming big hit
KOCHI: Through its green initiatives and energy conservation programmes, the Greater Cochin Development Authority has become a role model for other civic bodies.
For the third consecutive year, the Authority’s cool-weather vegetable farming has been a success with a rich harvest. Actor Manju Warrier will inaugurate the harvesting of more than 1500 cabbages grown at the GCDA office premises on December 30.
Though the Authority started growbag vegetable farming three years ago on an experimental basis, it has made the initiative successful. No other agency in the city has been cultivating cool weather vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage on a large scale. Last year, 300 cabbages and cauliflowers were cultivated.
PSC chairman Dr. K. S Radhakrishnan, MLAs Hibi Eden, Benny Behanan and Dominic Presentation and district collector M.G Rajamanickam would also attend the harvesting ceremony, said Authority chairman N. Venugopal.
