Anbumani meets Modi, seeks Rs 20,000 crore relief
‘Declare Cuddalore district disaster-affected’.
CHENNAI: PMK MP and party’s chief Ministerial candidate Anbumani Ramadoss has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare coastal Cuddalore district as disaster affected and allot Rs 20,000 crore to the district alone for permanent relief and rehabilitation. In a brief interaction with Modi in New Delhi, Anbumani informed him about the extent of natural disaster triggered by continuous rain in the state. He pointed out that Cuddalore district was being affected by natural disasters repeatedly. The district was one of the worst affected during tsunami in 2004. Several thousand fishermen were affected and lost their livelihood. Subsequently, the district bore the brunt of attack of Thane cyclone in 2011.
Even as Cuddalore was limping back to normalcy, torrential rain lashed the district for more than a month-and-a-half. The district was submerged. People faced untold misery.
A large number of people lost their livelihood and livestock. Crops raised on several thousand acres were damaged, he said. Anbumani alleged that one of the major causes of inundation was pumping out of water from Neyveli Lignite Corporation. He asked NLC to provide employment to persons who gave away their lands to the company.
Anbumani also requested Modi to take necessary steps to postpone the civil services examination (main) from December 18 to December 23. Several candidates from Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh, which were affected by the torrential rain for nearly a month, are to appear for the exam.
